A Curious Experience
It is thirty years ago in the well worn medical office of a grizzled, cigar chomping country doctor. This country doctor supplies medical care for a largely farming community whose inhabitants loving called him just "Doc".
Imagine a newly licensed nurse in awe of Doc, her first employer and medical mentor. The young woman is earnest in her desire to uphold her sworn oath to 'give good care and do no harm'.
So on this spring day in 1980, Doc holds up a gallon sized pickle jar filled with brightly colored "sugar" pills and instructs his young protégé to dispense a handful of the brightly colored fake pills to a patient.
Observing her confusion, Doc chuckles and explains that if he can't find any known medical or mental reason for a patient's complaints he gives that patient a supply of "pills" from the pickle jar and tells the patient to pay only if the pills don't help!
Can't you just hear the confused young nurse asking in astonishment, " But Doc, can fake pills really cure?" Doc grins around his well chewed cigar, pats her gently on the back and says, "Works every time kid, works every time. Their mind will cure what ails them, because I'm the Doc & they believe."
Well, as you may have surmised, the young nurse was me and I now realize that Doc was using a powerful form of waking hypnosis. He allowed patients to tap into the powerful ability of their mind, of their belief in his authority, to change actual perception of pain or illness.
Of course, in today's medical world, giving a patient a placebo without their knowledge or consent would not be tolerated and lawsuits would fly! But 30 years ago? - I doubt that any of Doc's patients were aware they were being given placebos, and if they did, they only cared that the pills worked! And mostly, they did!
It was astonishing then, and it is now. Thus was born my fascination and hunger to learn more about our minds astounding abilities to "cure what ails." Whether that "ailment" is emotional or physical pain, stress, addiction, attitidues or behaviors, the mind is a powerful tool for change and internal healing.
